Actual time of arrival A.T.A.- The local military time that our vehicles and aircraft arrive at their destination. Actual time of departure A.T.D.- The local military time that our vehicles and aircraft depart. Agent manifest - A manifest used to report shipments that were handed over to an agent who will not be returning the same day with a Proof of Delivery. Agent/owner operator 0/0- A designated person or company that acts on behalf of Purolator Courier Ltd. to transport freight. Air shipment - Any shipment designated by the customer to travel within our air system to ensure overnight delivery. This freight requires segregation for special handling. Airport code - A three-letter code which is permanently assigned to an airport and recognized worldwide (i.e., "YYZ" is Pearson International airport Toronto). Authorization - Approval that is often required for transportation of High Value or restricted items; may be granted by Senior Vice President, and/or others who are given that responsibility. - Bill of Lading Bonded warehouse - A special warehouse for shipments where the importer is exempt from paying duty on foreign goods that will be re-exported. The bonded warehouse allows for the delay of payment of customs duties until the owner moves the goods into the final destination. Border crossing - Terminology used when tracking a shipment into or out of U.S. and abroad, which indicates that the shipment has traveled into or out of the country. Brickloading - The process of arranging boxes in a trailer to minimize space between individual pieces while stabilizing the freight and preventing load shifting and subsequent damage. Brokerage fee - See Customs Broker Bulk - A shipment which falls under the guidelines of 75 pieces or 500 lbs. It also refers to any oversized or irregular piece. C Call centre dispatch - The computerized dispatch system used by Purolator that allows customer service representatives to dispatch pickup requests automatically to couriers. Call in - Term for pickup request by a customer who is not on a regular pickup schedule. Central
unmarked services (CUS) - A centralized facility which receives
all freight which has no visible markings which render the shipment
undeliverable. C.U.S. Manifests, maintains a P.C. data base, warehouses
the freight for 9 months pending recovery, tracing or a claim. Chain of signatures (COS) - An automatic digitally tracked chain of custody procedure used in shipping Controlled Drugs and firearms. It is only available to approved shippers so contact your Purolator Sales representative if you want this product. Purolator's Chain of Signature is now tracked digitally and no longer requires a special bill of lading. Chocks - Wheel blocks to prevent rolling of parked aircraft or tractor trailers. CIF
- Cost, Insurance and Freight claim - A formal written request submitted by the customer to attempt to regain the full or partial value including the shipping charges of a lost or damaged shipment. C.O.D.
- Cash on delivery - When payment for the cost of the goods (not
the cost of the shipping charges) is made by the Consignee to the delivery
agent. Purolator does not accept COD but does offer ExpressCheque
service (see entry of same name) which allows the pickup of a cheque
in exchange for delivery of a shipment. Collect surcharge - A surcharge which is applied on shipments which have been designated "Collect". Commercial invoice - Documentation required on U.S. shipments of dutiable nature. Describes contents in detail for customs purposes. Commercial value - The value that is used to assess duty. It is the actual value of the shipment, which may or may not be equal to the declared value (for PCL’s insurance purposes). Commodity - Group term for a type of goods. Confirmation number - A number given by a customer service representative to a customer confirming that a pickup has been scheduled. Consignee - Party receiving the shipment known as the "Receiver". Consignor - Party sending the shipment known as the "Sender". Containerization - The act of placing all packages going to the same destination area in the same large bin, or container. Controlled drugs - Any drug that is only available by a doctor’s prescription. These drugs must be shipped through our Chain of Signature service. COS
- Chain of Signatures Courier - An employee who performs the pickup or delivery of customer shipments. Courier reference guide - Booklet containing information about Purolator policies and procedures and answers to most common questions. Cradle - An electronic wall unit which holds the scanner and is connected to P.C. Data is transmitted between the P.C. and scanner through the cradle. The cradle also recharges the scanner. CSR
- Customer Service Representative Cubing rule - To ensure we are paid fairly for the cost of transporting large light packages. When determining the rate, we take into account the space the package will occupy as well as its weight. Curb side - The name for a large-volume pickup and delivery vehicle that is designed to allow entry and exit from the kerb. Also often referred to as a breadwagon because of its style). CUS
- Central Unmarked Shipments Customer service representative (CSR) - A Purolator employee who performs sales support through: Telemarketing, Customer needs analysis, Resolving customer service problems, Generating sales leads and other functions. Customs broker - Individual or firm which has the authority to transact business on behalf of the importer or exporter. The charge for handling the custom clearance process is call a "Brokerage Fee" Customs charges - These are charges coming directly from the Customs Broker for clearance of cross-border shipments. Customs clearance - A shipment is not allowed to enter the country until Customs has "cleared" it, or formally granted it admission. Customs documentation - The documents that the government states are necessary for goods to be imported and/or exported. Customs official - The Customs representative who examines shipments (goods) entering the country to check that the Customer’s documentation is in order, to check that duty is charged properly, and to decide whether the goods can cross the border and be accepted into the country.
D Dangerous goods (DG) - Commodities falling under Federal regulations as Hazardous Goods that require special shipping paperwork and in some cases dangerous goods signs known as "placarding" on the exterior of transporting vehicles. Data entry staff - Employees who input data from bills of lading, manifests. etc., into our billing system: and/or from delivery records, undeliverable, misdirect logs, etc into our Purotrak System. Declared value (DV) - The amount that the customer would like to insure his shipment against loss or damage, during transportation. This amount must be written in the appropriate place on the Bill of lading. Dedicated service - Exclusive use of a vehicle and courier at an hourly rate. The service is subject to availability. Delivery - When the courier leaves the parcel with the consignee, obtaining a signature as proof of the delivery. Depot - A major operational location (also known as a Terminal) where shipments for pickup and delivery are processed. Delivery attempt - A tag left if the customer is not home or present to accept the delivery advising them of the attempted delivery (also known as a Door Knocker). DG
- Dangerous Goods Dispatch - To relay pickup information and other instructions to couriers while on their routes using pagers. District - A geographic operating area often referred to by a 3-digit number such as Scarborough 560. DK - Door Knocker (delivery attempt notice) DM
- District Manager Dock plate - A movable ramp used on loading docks to match the height of the dock to the height of the vehicle being loaded or unloaded. Domestic shipment - Shipments that travel within one country. Download - The process of transferring data from the host computer to the PC to the scanner. Drop box - A package receptacle similar to a mailbox where customers deposit their small-package shipments instead of having a courier pickup. Drop frame trailer - A specialized trailer, also known as a "Fat Albert", in which the frame is lower than that of a standard trailer, allowing for increased volumes to be transported. Dutiable item - A commodity that has been declared as taxable by the Government of the country into which the goods are entering. Duty - A tax charged by the Government of the country into which the goods are entering. tariff - The quoted rates for shipping charges to infrequent users
as filed with Canadian Authorities. Freight - This refers to all shipments and packages regardless of commodity handled in our system. Freight forwarder - A business operation that, in the ordinary course of its activities: (1) assembles and consolidates, property for shipment by air or performs or provides for the performance of brak-bulk and distribution operations with respect to consolidated shipments, and (2) is responsible for the transportation of property from the point of receipt to the point of destination. An air freight forwarder may utilize the services of a direct air carrier for the whole or any part of such transportation or may provide the entire transportation in its own airplane or motor trucks. An air freight forwarder is ordinarily classed as an indirect air carrier; however, under air transport industry deregulation, an air freight forwarder may operate as a direct carrier as well. Freight on board (FOB) - Point at which responsibility for freight transfers from consignor to consignee; may be shipper’s dock, receiver’s dock or alternate specified address as agreed upon. - Freight on Board G Guarantee - A policy of refunding costs, at the customer's request, for special services such as 9:00 AM, 10:30, Saturday Service, that are backed by a money-back guarantee, where the on-time delivery commitment is not kept and results in a service failure. H Hand-to-hand - Special shipping arrangement whereby the package travels separate from the bulk of other freight. Harmonized Code - A description and coding system which has been adapted by the Customs Coperation Council in most of the trading nations. The first six digits of any code representing a specific commodity are exactly the same in all countries which are part of this system. Each country has additional digits or suffixes which are unique to their own country's requirements. Example: H.S. Code 4911.91 identifies Pictures, designs and photographs. By using this code at time of export from Canada to any country, it would be known exactly what the essential item was. There are roughly 25000 codes in Canada alone. - Hold For Pick Up Hold for pickup (HFPU) - A service available upon customer request where a shipment, identified by a HFPU sticker applied at time of pickup, is held at the destination terminal until the customer picks it up rather than being delivered directly to the Receiver. HR

- Industrial Engineering In bond - Name for shipments that are cleared through Customs, traveling in a sealed container, to an in bond warehouse. The shipment is then cleared by the Customs Broker prior to delivery. Inbound - A term used to describe any shipment that originates in one district but is delivered by another district. Internal revenue service (IRS) - A number used by US customs to process shipments and assess duties and taxes. International outbound manifest - A form on which all shipments leaving Canada are listed. International shipment - Any shipment destined to the United States or to any other country overseas. K KG - Kilogram L Labelope - A plastic pouch that you affix to your package to securely hold your bill of lading. Once the bill of lading is printed and folded in half, you simply insert it into the labelope and affix it to your package. Lead hand - Name for an hourly-paid assistant to a supervisor who does a combination of dock work and administrative duties. LB
- Pound License - The legal authority granted by any province that outlines the limitation of Purolator's operations, including tariff rates. Limitation of liability - The extent to which we are legally responsible in case of loss or damage. In Canada our limitations are $2.00 per lb. or $4.41 per kg. unless a higher declared value (DV) is stated on the Bill of Lading, or there is a special agreement with the customer. Linehaul - A segment of our network that links one area to another, through the use of air or ground transportation. Linehaul schedule - All linehaul vehicles operate at specified departure and arrival times to ensure our service standards are maintained. LTA - Late Terminal Arrival LTL - Less Than Truckload
M Manifest - A type of Bill of Lading that can list multiple pieces or shipments from one shipper. Match
and attach - Term used by the Invoice Distribution Centre for the
process of matching the proper Bill of Lading to the customer’s invoices. Minimum requirement (MR) - Standards of performance for courier productivity which should be the minimum attainable goal after proper training has been completed. MIS meet - Terminology to describe a system whereby misdirected freight is re-sorted and transported for on time delivery within Metropolitan areas. Misdirect - A piece that arrives at the wrong destination area. MD - Managing Director MR - Minimum Requirement Multi-party pickup - A Call Centre Dispatch (CCD) term for a pickup request that can be arranged either by the receiver, the billing party or a third party. Multiple shipper - A customer who sends numerous (usually more than five) shipments each day. N N/C

- No Declared Value Night stop - A delivery that is regularly scheduled to occur outside our usual operation hours. Most of these deliveries occur between 10 PM and 6 AM. Due to the delivery time, special routing and handling of these shipments is required. No POD - No Proof of Delivery No proof of delivery (No POD) - Not having any verification that we have delivered the shipment in question. Non-conveyable freight - Any irregular shaped or oversized pieces that will not travel through our conveyer system. Non-dutiable item - A commodity which the government has decided will not be taxed upon import (i.e.,business correspondence worth less than $5.00). Noon delivery - A money back guarantee if the shipment is not delivered by 12:00 noon the next business day. Available from most origins to specified points. Available only to the first tariff (non-discounted) customers and for Puroletter products.
O On-board courier - Individuals utilized to ensure our international express shipments travel as baggage versus air cargo and carry accompanying paperwork from the gateway to our international destination service partner. Baggage is always boarded and clearance is expedited by our use of OBC’s. O/O - Owner Operator OPS - Operations Optimum load - The number of packages that can be carried without causing injury to the carrier or damage to the packages. Outbound - A term for a shipment originating in one district to be transported for delivery in another. P Pallet - See Skid Package identification number (PIN) - A unique number applied to each piece of a shipment which has a Bar Code and allows easy tracking and tracing of a shipment as it moves through the transportation system. Parcel - Older term for a package or piece. Payment-to-courier (PTC) - Name for a procedure where "cash" payment for the shipping charges is made at the time of pickup to the courier or shipping centre. agent for clearing freight through customs into and out of U.S. and
abroad. Pickup (P/U) - Acceptance of shipments to be transported by Purolator. Pickup route sheet - A form on which all pickup requests are recorded. These may be pre-printed regular pickups, or call in requests. The Bill of Lading number, number of pieces, name and address of consignor and time of pickup all must be recorded. - Proof of Pick Up Pouch - Mail Bag generated by individual customers, often with a company logo. It may be canvas or vinyl construction with a zipper closing. Prepaid (PPD) - Payment arrangements whereby the cost of sending the package through Purolator is invoiced to the Consignor (or sender). Preprints - Term for Bills of Lading that are pre-printed at the customer’s request with specific information such as name, address, telephone and account number. Presold bills of lading - Bills of Lading that are sold in set quantities at a reduced rate to the customer, in advance to shipping. Productivity percent effective - Measurement of efficiency based on required hours to perform a function versus actual hours taken to perform the function. Prohibited goods - Those commodities which are not allowed to be transported within the Purolator package handling system, due to our own regulations or those of our license. Proof of delivery (POD) - A paper record of a customer's signature, usually on a Delivery route record, obtained at the time of delivery of a shipment. Proof of pickup (POP) - A paper record of a shipment being picked up, as listed on the courier pickup route sheet, that is also used in cases of a claim or trace. PU - Pickup Purofax - Purolator’s electronic mail service which offers door-to-door facsimile transfer in a maximum of three hours. Available in most major centres in Canada. Purolator Courier Ltd. (PCL) - Full and complete name of our company. Puroletter - A free, Purolator-supplied envelope, designed for shipping a letter or legal-sized documents, that is charged by destination and not by weight and that is not subject to the "Collect" surcharge. Purolink - The name of the desktop shipping software program developed by Purolator for Customers to use on their personal computers to print shipping labels, request pick ups, track packages, order supplies and obtain a shipment price quote. Puropak - A secure, water resistant, plastic envelope, provided free of charge, that is designed for shipping nonbreakable commodities. Can be used worldwide although shipping costs are based on weight and destination. Puropost - An international remail service available to overseas points. Purotrak - Our computerized shipment tracing system.

R Region - A domestic service area determined either by revenue (Sales) or geography (Operations) that includes several Districts. Regular shipper - A customer who has pre-arranged pickups and/or deliveries. Route - A geographic section of a district in which a Courier is responsible for all pickups and deliveries. Route
bin - A freight consolidation container (usually metal and referred
to as a "cage") on wheels used within terminals to move freight from
sorting areas to the delivery vehicle. S Sales professional - A member of the sales department who contacts and visits customers to discover their shipping needs in an effort to obtain more business for Purolator. Sameday Service - A service provided by Purolator where a customer can request a pickup at any time of the day, 365 days per year, and Purolator will have it delivered the same day or according to needs of the customer. Saturday Service - Special Service offering guaranteed Saturday AM delivery of a Friday pickup, and guaranteed Monday AM delivery of a Saturday pickup to over 200 points in Canada. Scanner - Hand-held computing device, which reads bar codes. This information is then downloaded into our Purotrak System. Seconds per piece - The measurement used for couriers to load their vehicles and scan freight prior to starting delivery. Security Incident Report - A two-part form completed by employees (usually a manager) to report to upper management and to the Loss Prevention department any incident involving loss, theft, damage or suspicious activity concerning a shipment. Security seal - A uniquely numbered plastic band attached by dock managers to locks on trailers to prevent tampering and theft of contents. Service failure - Any instance whereby we do not complete the cycle of picking up or delivering a shipment or part of a shipment. Shipment - Any packages or envelopes that are picked up at one time, going from one Shipper’s location to one Receiver’s location on one Bill of Lading. Shipping centre - A locations where customers can walk-in to and receive service (i.e., drop off a package or pickup a package). Also known as Customer Service Centres, Walk-In Centre, or a Convenience Centre. Shrink wrap - Plastic material used to bind freight together on skids to ensure stability during transport. Shunt truck - A type of tractor used in the yard for the movement of trailers in and out of the doors. S/P - Seconds per Piece SIR
- Security Incident Report Smalls - Term for envelopes and small parcels, up to the size of a Kleenex box. SNR - Signature not required Social Security Number (SSN) - The American equivalent of the Canadian Social Insurance Number or S.I.N. Sort - A process in which the packages are selected and grouped according to destination. Stop - Any attempt to pickup or deliver to a unique address. If there are several suites or offices within a complex individually addressed, each is considered to be a stop. However if several shipments are delivered to or picked up from one central location or Mail Room serving multi units, the central location is then one stop. Stop service - Accounts Receivable term for the status of a customer's account, namely that service is suspended because of a problem such as non-payment with their account.
T Tariff - A list or scale of prices or charges, as authorized by the government and contained in our license. Terminal - A major operational location (also known as a Depot) where shipments for pickup and delivery are processed. Trace - A customer request to be provided with a Proof of Delivery. Track - The process of following a shipment through our transportation system with the goal of obtaining a Proof of Delivery. Transit times - Reference to the number of working days required to transport a shipment from point of pickup to point of delivery, expressed in terms of ground or air service.
U UC - Utility Courier UL
- User Liaison Unicode - The name of our Unique Identification Coding System for all Purolator terminals that ensures accuracy in directing freight to the proper destination terminal using Postal Codes. Unit loading device (ULD) - A piece of equipment used in Air Operations for handling and transporting Air freight. Universal Postal Union (UPU) - Organization of Post Offices throughout the world that processes standard packages called Express Mail Shipments (EMS). Unmarked shipment - A shipment that does not have any type of shipping label, such as a bill of lading, pick-up address or delivery address, allowing delivery only after research and resolution. (See also Central Unmarked Services) Upload - The process of transferring shipment status information from the scanner to the trakksite PC and host computer for tracking. Also known as "download". UPU - Universal Postal Union US AM - Brand name of pre-noon delivery service to USA Utility courier (UC) - A Courier who is assigned as a replacement to cover absenteeism. Utilization - Engineering term for measurement of actual work performed versus reasonable expectancy.
